Openish Thread (Testing a New Feature…)
Hey all. It’s Sunday afternoon of a holiday weekend and the weather is glorious here, so what better (worse) time to unleash a new feature on KDO? I’ve been working on a new wysiwyg comment editor for the past few days and it’s finally ready to go. Asking you folks to deal with HTML while leaving a comment was always a bit of a kludge, but now you can include links, blockquoted text, lists, and bold/italic text formatting in your comments and know exactly what it’s going to look like before posting.
You can try it out by sharing something worthwhile you’ve seen, heard, or learned recently. Feedback and bug reports welcome!!

I love this Instagram post about a woman who went to a World Cup watch party in Oakland for a Cape Verde match. 30 years ago, she'd spent two years on Cape Verde teaching English to teenagers.
Small bug report: using cmd + B/cmd + I seems like it can get into a weird state where it cannot "unapply" the formatting (at least in the display; not sure how the content ultimately gets displayed).
Very cool to see this, though. Love how simple and clear the interactions are.
Hi Sean. I squashed a bug like this earlier and I can't get this one to reproduce. What browser/OS are you on?
Maybe everyone knows about this already, but I've recently rediscovered Infinite Mac and it's so much fun. A nice reminder that computers don't have to be evil. (Also: here in Firefox on dark mode, I can't see the hyperlink because it's the same color as the background! If I highlight it, I can see it.)
Ah yes, that is a bug. Let's see if it's fixed. Seems to be! Thanks for catching it.
I stayed as a guest in someone’s home recently and they had this tissue dispenser in their bathroom. Somehow I’ve gone my entire life without seeing this style tissue dispenser. Now I’m browsing various designs I had never considered for dispensing tissues. [styling buttons and keyboard shortcuts work for me!]
Quick question: how many of you use dark mode vs. light mode when reading KDO?
I'm always, always light mode. I don't think I use dark mode in a single app or website. My son thinks I'm deranged for using Discord in light mode.
Always dark mode wherever it is offered.
Dark mode on mobile, light mode on desktop.
DM 100%
light mode
Both, depending on mood. I have no loyalty.
Light mode 100%
Light mode. Always.
Oh and I forgot to add: draft comment text is saved automagically if you accidentally close the comment editor. Works for replies too.
When making text bold, (at least in safari), if I select it after the fact and bold it it's fine. but I can't type command-B and keep typing (which I don't really care about), and if I highlight the most recent word and bold it with command B, there's no way to stop the bold text. command-b by itself does nothing. selecting everything but the word I want bold unbolds everything, including the word I want bold. the only way to actually bold a word is to go back and do it later.
Also, I just noticed if you're typing bold text and autocorrect replaces a mistyped word, that replaced word won't be bold, but everything around it will.
We’re leaving tomorrow on a road trip through Michigan! MSP to the UP, then down along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, including a stop to do a triathlon and check off my 3rd Great Lake swim. Then stopping in Chicago on the way home, which initially I was resistant to but after a visit w/o my kid I figured yes, my kid should see the biggest city she’s seen.
If you have any strong thoughts on the best pasties, Mackinac island, or anything else, let me know!
I've never had a pastie that wasn't the blandest thing I've ever eaten. I'm sure a local would tell you otherwise, but they're all pretty much the same to me. Do stop in Traverse City though, if you haven't been. Great little downtown to walk around and shop. Stop at Milk N Honey for ice cream.
It might take a small jog, but Betty’s Pies just north of Duluth. So worth it.
We're road tripping up the coast from Southern California in August; last stop will be the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Anyone been?
Obnoxious self-promo (sorry if that's frowned upon) -- check out my blog if you enjoy strange, humorous short stories! 🙆♀️
I am testing this new wysiwig editor and I can't seem to turn bold on/off using Ctrl-B unless I highlight the text and then press the "button". Same problem with italics. I'm one of those keyboard shortcuts guys since I learned keyboards on an IBM card reader and an IBM 327x terminal.
Does, or will, this editor also support Markdown eventually?
Environment is Windows 10, Firefox 152.0.4.
A very young Questlove is in the video for Boyz II Men's "Motownphilly."

I recently watched The Straight Story and enjoyed it.
