Slow Start to the Week
Hey folks. I’m dropping my son off at college today1 so the site is going to be a little slow until I get back midweek. In the meantime, you can check out some of the great sites on the KDO Rolodex on the front page of the site (scroll down some), and I’ll see you back here sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday. ๐
- What?! I know! College already. I’m so excited for him but also just wondering how this happened so fast.↩

Just dropped our second off at college - it does not get easier!
Wanted to add the single most important thing I learned (the hard way) with our first kid. If your kids are going to a school out of state - talk to your health insurance to see which hospitals / urgent cares are covered under your plan in the new state and convey that to your kids. In our shitty healthcare system, not all hospitalinsurance relationships are equal and it took me a year and a half to unwind bills and co-pays after a health scare necessitated a 10 day hospital stay.
i'd also suggest that having power of attorney + health care directive to hand is invaluable. i downloaded the forms from mama bear legal forms & had a notary witness & certify for both our kids.
As a physician in the US, +1 to both of these suggestions!
Can confirm both of these. Ran into access and coverage issues w/insurance. Luckily never need the POA
Thanks for the advice. Weโve got the power of attorney stuff taken care of and the health care coverage is in hand as well. ๐ฎโ๐จ
We're taking my daughter on Thursday. I am struggling to keep it together while simultaneously beaming with pride.
I like the new lil expanding comment doodad. And congrats to you and your son!
Congratulations to both of you. Itโs a big step. Iโd also like to say thanks, as a marker of time, Iโve been enjoying your site for so long now.
Remembering the baby reveal on kottke.org 18 years ago. Wow.
Totally, where does the time go?
My son is starting his final semester of college at UW Madison which is only an hour from out house. After graduation he'll be moving to Denver CO. I didn't have trouble watching him go to college (he's super independent and capable), I couldn't have been more excited for him. I think I was jealous. He was accomplishing things I couldn't and making it look fun and effortless.
Last week we did a 90 mile bike race together that we trained for over the summer. I think that experience was a gift he gave me before moving away an appreciable distance. It will be tougher to see him more 16 hours away.
Here is a fun short video my wife made of the race.
Just dropped my college junior at O'Hare for a semester in London. Super psyched for her. Incredibly anxious as a parent.
I like to intentionally say "I get to drop my daughter off at college" and "I get to drop my daughter off to fly away for a semester abroad", as opposed to "I have to...". It reminds me of the great privilege I enjoy in this life. The kids are alright.

This is the name that'll be displayed next to comments you make on kottke.org; your email will not be displayed publicly. I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation.
Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
If you feel like this comment goes against the grain of the community guidelines or is otherwise inappropriate, please let me know and I will take a look at it.
