It is winter. A third of the city is poor. And unworn clothing is being destroyed nightly.

That’s the NY Times writing about H&M and Wal-Mart cutting up and then dumping unwanted inventory on the streets of Manhattan.

As a companion to an offline article about illegal logging, the New Yorker has a video that traces illegally cut wood in Russia to distribution and manufacturing centers in China and eventually a finished toilet seat is shipped to Wal-Mart in the US.

Wal-Mart wants to sell 100 million CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs) in the next 12 months. “Compact fluorescents emit the same light as classic incandescents but use 75% or 80% less electricity.” Between this and the organic food, Wal-Mart is agressively pursuing green initiatives.
