Salon, one of the last OG general interest web publications, is shutting down. “When Salon launched in November 1995, the web was a very different place.” And: “We have reached the difficult decision that our publishing model is no longer sustainable.”

I have liked Salon and it has always had good writing, but I could never figure out what it was. Criticism? Social commentary? Sorta news? It always seemed like an edge case, a repository of sharp writing that had no clear home. That's fun, but not necessarily strong enough to build a brand and devoted audience. The question I have is: Why wasn't it reworked for a specific niche or closed earlier? How did it keep going this way for so long?
I hope someone has eyes on Slate.
