I'll be honest - I learned more about Tenzing Norgay from the movie Intolerable Cruelty than I ever did from a history class.
I had the good luck to meet Edmund Hillary when I was an undergraduate. He was the Brockington Visitor at Queens University during my first year and Brock Hall was my residence. I remember him being a commanding presence in the common room where he sat down and chatted with a small group of us. He was surprisingly huge, obviously a big strong guy even in his 60s, and impressive in both his physicality and his matter of fact manner of speaking. He talked about the dangers of the trip down from the summit and that always stuck with me. I would have been 18 or so, and (metaphor alert!) it had never occurred to me that harsh reality has a way of continuing even after you've reached the top.
