Anil Dash built a standalone Touch ID sensor to use with your Mac if you don’t have a newer Apple keyboard. It’s open-source…the code and instructions are on Github.

Also possible to pull the real Touch ID sensor from an external Apple keyboard and use that as a button. You get the full Touch ID: it's not just typing your password like the one Anil Dash built. https://sixcolors.com/post/2022/08/my-touch-id-button-is-fully-deconstructed/
