Don’t use AI until you’re 40. “We have been so quick to treat access to new technology as an inevitability that we have failed to question whether every powerful tool should be placed in the hands of every developing mind the moment it becomes available.”

Counterpoint: Keep Boomers away from AI. It will only rot their brains.

Perhaps you have to be exactly 40 to use AI. You only get 365 days, like an LLM-fueled rumspringa.

So 40-67; totally workable. Might even say 35-67.

I like Jason’s idea – at 40 everyone gets a personal golden age of AI supercharged technological and artistic magnificence.

I was in rural Peru a few weeks ago and met a septuagenarian artist with a very successful career whose practice had morphed into a large studio with multiple employees. Over 30 minutes he walked us through four decades of his ceramics work. His latest chapter was asking ChatGPT to tell him what his artwork meant, and "how it made ChatGPT feel..." which he felt intrigued and inspired by. He had decided to take AI's lead as an ultimate authority, and was adjusting his practice according to what ChatGPT told him to do, with very questionable results. As a I looked around the room with my colleagues there were visible looks of disbelief. This is a person whose work is in several North American museums.
