As a swimmer and cellist up through high school, there are two truisms I've come to know:
1. Actors can act, but they can't "act" swimming.
2. Actors playing stringed instruments (violin, cello, etc. in particular)...same.
I think it's like learning a language - if you learn the basics at age 7-10 or so, it just flows from you naturally. If you learn it as an adult, it always looks like you're mechanically going through the "proper" motions.
Pedro Pascal looks a LOT!!! better than most actors that "act" as the violinist/cellist/etc., but still - I can tell in a heartbeat that he plays the cello like Stephen Harper (former Canadian Prime Minister) spoke French: he can hit the notes, but not the essence.
I haven't played a cello in 40yrs, but give me a few days, and I'd look better (at playing the cello; and in absolutely no other way) than PP.
I noticed this too. I'm not a musician at all, but I could tell that he was a bit out of sync.
I love Master and Commander but can't bare to watch the scenes where Russel Crowe plays the violin. Takes me out of it immediately.
my first impression watching it was: did they awkwardly CGI his hands with an actual player? (per your "proper" comment).
Will Arnett nailing the delivery of his “What are you doing here?” line much better than BoJack ever could.
