Uncovered, a site for judging books by their first pages. “No cover. No bestseller sticker, no celebrity book club, no BookTok trend. You read the opening of a real book, blind, and answer the only question that matters: would you keep reading?”

Reminds me of one of my favourite covers – Dave Eggers’ design for You Shall Know Our Velocity. Impossible not to be intrigued by this if you saw it on a bookshop table.

That reminds me of One Hundred Years of Solitude  - starting out with a death and an intriguing event that will happen at some point in the narrative. I'd be a sucker for that; I like knowing where a story is going when I start it.

I like this whole idea of getting a preview of a books writing - so much more informative than the cover!

First line of One Hundred Years of Solitude if anyone is curious and doesn't want to look it up:
"Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."

Most of And Other Stories recent books start the text on the front cover (in the striking Stellage typeface). Scroll down this page to see. (Taiwan Travelogue recently won the International Booker Prize.)
