Bodega Cats of New York

The Bodega Cats of New York project documents the working cats of NYC’s delis, bodegas, and corner stores.

The cat at the local deli wasn’t a pet. She knew the regulars. She kept the mice out. She gave people a reason to walk an extra block. And she was technically a violation of city health code.

That was six years ago. Since then, the project has documented over 150 shops, collected 13,500 petition signatures, and helped introduce the first legislation in New York City history to classify bodega cats as working animals.

Available soon in book form.

I’m a little confused about the ownership of the idea (if ideas should even be owned!). There’s a huge IG account, “bodega cats of instagram.” Then there’s this project, which seems great, and has done the advocacy to get them legalized, but which calls itself the “definitive record.” Not trying to stir the pot here, just noting. Also, when i got a photo featured on the former account, it was one of those “and now i can rest” moments of life.

Oh, hey, this isn't Bodega Cats of New York the Instagram account I've followed for forever? Hmm.

Realizing the IG is Bodega Cats of IG but still a lot of them are in NYC.
