Great new Patrick Radden Keefe piece on a New Orleans insurance fraud scheme involving big rigs. “After all, who would agree to be cut open on an operating table if it weren’t necessary? Quite a lot of people, it turns out.”

Fascinating article. Made me think about all the things that are systemically broken: There was a clear pattern of fraud, but insurance companies find it more expedient to just settle; lawyers that should be clearly disbarred permanently seem to be allowed to join the bar again; the patchwork of jurisdiction between local, state and federal authorities; and the rampant poverty which makes schemes like this irresistible to a sizable segment of society.

Reading this felt a wee bit like watching a heist movie, and I was on the edge of my seat until runaway greed became murder. Then it read like a courtroom drama, without the gratifying ending. Thanks for sharing your discovery of this piece.
