Endgame for the Open Web, brought on by LLM bots, content summarizing while driving no traffic, increasing paywalls for information of all kinds, locking down APIs (due to AI abuse), attacks on Wikipedia, disruption of open source communities, etc.

It’s a long list, but I don’t think any of these things will bring the open web down as fast as the legislative attacks on Section 230 in the US, and the waves of identity verification laws being enacted around the world (all of which furthers the interests of Big Tech too, though they pretend otherwise).

I think Anil is right that there a ways to fight back against the AI-driven threats to the open web. But I despair of the moral-panic threat to it — I don’t know what will be left after we’ve “saved the children” from whatever.

Depressing. I'm glad I got to use the web before AI.

As far as the age verification goes, the government wants to do it at the operating system level. How do I determine the age of the user of the OS that runs my smart refrigerator, my router, or my printer? How about my Raspberry Pi?
