'Forgotten'? 'forgotten?' what even is this? I mean, seriously, the walkman probably changed how people listen to music as much as anything since recorded music existed, and it was invented less than fifty years ago ... oh, OK yes, that is quite a long time ago.

The two budget ones I burned through growing up are sacred items in my memory. My older brother let 12-year-old me copy his tapes. Four years my elder, he had a stereo system with two tape decks and a dub function. I only had maybe half a dozen "blank" tapes, which were reused many times. Audiophiles begone! These sounded amazing to me on my Sanyo and those flimsy foam headphones. I would love to listen to my long lost copy (of a copy?) of Led Zeppelin III through that system. Remember when the world seemed like something you were inventing as you went along? Good times.

My first Walkman was as big as a brick. I upgraded to the Sony WM-10. It cost $99 in 1983, and amazingly, it was the same size as the plastic cassette case. You can buy them used on eBay now for about $120.
