This Is Why Everyone Is a DJ Now
I guess this is as good an explanation of contemporary culture as anything.
Hungover from a world that told us we could be anything, we decided to be DJs. We don’t create our own music. We curate playlists, recirculating songs that will make people think we’re cool. And we do this through the labels we wear, the books we read, the people we hang out with, and the opinions we parrot. The DJ figure, ruled by the same logic, is just another celebration of self.

I feel like I'm too old for this and yet it resonates with me. The kids are all right.
I like this channel’s style, they commit to the bit, but I also feel uncomfortable with many of the topics.
That being said, the premise of these are always winking, tongue-in-cheek and I shouldn’t take it too seriously, but I did want to opine that there’s a difference between actual paid DJs/party emcee/orchestrators and the thing implied by the other term ‘selectors’ (people barely paying attention to sequencing when assembling tracks, but embrace an ethos with those selections) - good DJing is important and a real thing just like how luck is a skill some people have, I respect both for the selfish, non-intellectual reasons we enjoy human expression.
I do think people with a deep level of music history and enthusiasm for sharing can do something interesting as a DJ (e.g. Questlove for me). To this guy's point, I do really, really feel the point about too much main-character energy in the world today, even if I don't know many aspiring DJs myself.
I'm ready to see this guy and Adam Curtis get together for a fun chat.
I know this channel isn't aiming for "truth" per se, and I've enjoyed some of the other videos. But if you actually follow DJing right now you'd know the majority do make their own music. Pick up anything by DjRUM or Martyn or (plug for a friend) SUCHI.
