Don’t Let the Days Go By…

This is a lovely cover of Bush’s Glycerine by Allison Lorenzen and Midwife, set to a poignant series of very short videos of everyday life. Give this 20 seconds of your complete attention and you’ll watch the whole thing, I promise. (via @mariabustillos.com)

A haunting, beautiful spin on an absolutely classic grunge banger from my youth. Listening to the lyrics and seeing those plain and poignant visuals, I couldn't help but think of a line from Sagan's Contact: "You're an interesting species. An interesting mix. You're capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you're not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other."

There are no nightmares in this rendition of the song or the video, of course—those are happening right now, all around us. But seeing this brought on such melancholy about all the wasted potential. The cuts to science, medicine; the cruelty toward people who just want to exist and live an oridnary life. I think, for most of us, the clips in this music video are things we'd all rather be doing right now: a lot of peaceful nothing; occasional moments of joy; lots boredom and the exhiliration of life on your own terms, and not those dictated to you by scared, small-minded people.
