From Sight & Sound, a list of the best video essays of 2025. I have barely seen or linked to or even heard of most of these. What am I even doing here, besides utterly failing you? (I wonder what would make my list…?)

You are not failing me, personally. I want to _read_ essays, not have them shown to me in video format or read to me in audio format.

I actually love video essays (in the right mood, Nerdwriter is my absolutely favorite thing)โ€” but I find this list actually less interesting than the ones you usually post! Art installation video is an entirely different thing in my book and this leans heavily toward that gallery-festival mode rather than the great, wide internet. No shade, just not the same

I am only becoming aware of them because you are posting them now. Time is a social construct anyway.
