My mate Antonio has been doing this for, ooh, about a decade now? It's a fascinating little niche of passionate activity that never seems in danger of going mainstream (whatever that means these days).
Strudel is pretty approachable and fun to play around with. You can do some impressive things with very little code, or even full remixes of songs with samples and visualizations.
