This was a surprise to me, too!
For some reason, the fact that there's a nine inch height difference between Hall and Oates makes me believe that anything possible.
I did a brief googling as to how Lisa Loeb's "Stay" got popular without record-label support: her pal Ethan Hawke, whom Lisa knew from the New York art scene. He got the song onto the Reality Bites soundtrack, directed the music video, and encouraged MTV to play it. Thanks Ethan!
