Among the questions being asked: Are these paintings even art? Or are they religious artifacts, akin to visual analogues of the tablets containing the Ten Commandments brought down the mountain by Moses? Art historians now say af Klint got to abstraction before Kandinsky, but whereas Kandinsky was likely attempting to push at the boundaries of representational art, af Klint may have been painting visual religious documents. Does that matter?
