Oh no, that's genuinely bad news.
While there are a bunch of other similar vendors and lot of Arduino's ecosystem is open source, Qualcomm has the means (and inclination) to ruin things with their patent trolling DNA.
If they wreck it, there aren't a lot of great alternatives for low cost real-time platforms
