In high school, my best friends and I (all notorious stoners) were cast as the Players in our high school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We always got a kick out of one of the lines introducing us:

“What hempen homespuns have we swaggering here?”

That line definitely made it in our yearbook quotes.

Personally, I find it useful for turning off the anxiety about whether or not a piece is good while I write it — and thus makes it easier to experiment with weird ideas — but it also gives me a sort of "removed" sense from what I'm working on as well. It feels less intense and personal, more like I'm looking at something else someone has written. This is really useful for editing and thinking analytically about what problems a book might have.
