This is great. After running for office, I think everyone should run for something, city council, school board, the legislature, etc. Start small! It's also a fantastic way to learn new (and probably pretty boring) facts about things you can just drop into dinner party conversation.
National vs local is a thing I am currently in a battle about with my non-swing state volunteers who want to work outside the state, when we are two seats away from breaking the legislative supermajority. I keep reminding them that gerrymandering starts in the legislature, but breaking that narrative that national/presidential is the only race that matters is HARD.
