Haha, Hank Green discovers the automobile industry’s wet putty paint job and, dare I say it, gets a little unhinged about it.

I'm excited to watch this. It irks me, but wow, does my wife have a visceral reaction to seeing putty cars. She's a car geek and cannot *#&$ing handle it in public without immediate commentary.

Oddly, the trove of cultural idea rumination (and car culture reflection), rap music lyrics doesn't appear to have instances introducing the Nardo trend (that I'm aware of)? Whereas didn't Jason mention 'candy shell' paint jobs before, "candy paint, candy paint, I ain't gotta tell ya what the rims look like" (genius link) - "clean on the outside, ice cream paint job"... c'mon folks, the truth is out there

Hank Green reading Blackbird Spyplane is a thing I would pay for EVERY DAY.

I need more of this unexpected collision of worlds too!

AFAIK, the paint omits the metalflake component. That, plus the fact that this is the color of primer, is kinda weird.

On the right color, though, the look is really vibrant and cool.

Although the absolute best paint out there in mass production right now has to be that glorious ruby red that Mazda uses on higher-end vehicles. Yum!

As soon as you said “best paint” my mind went to that Mazda red. It’s spectacular in summer sunlight!

I’ve been quite fond of the putty grey, but I remember when everyone got the cool new teal/blue/green colour in the 90s, and how well that aged.

My only complaint is the use of the word "suddenly", which is not one I would choose for a design trend that's years old at this point. Great work by Hank otherwise though!

Shoutout to Jason linking that Blackbird Spyplane post originally. It was a great piece and there's nothing like a "this is what this design communicates and why that appeals to a demographic that you may be part of" to make you think about your own consumer choices. Similarly, this scene in Devil Wears Prada lives in my brain...

I haven't watched the video, but just from the title alone I have been noticing putty cars EVERYWHERE please help me
