In 1991, Scorsese’s Goodfellas lost Best Picture to Dances With Wolves.

I am certainly not the first to observe this, but boy does the Academy love a facile, treacly racial reconciliation story, and boy does it not love anything that would make it interrogate its own whiteness.
It's not just that films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Do The Right Thing lost. Neither was even nominated for Best Picture. Through the lens of history, it's one thing to pick the wrong film, and quite another to ignore important works entirely.
